LJ style help

Somewhere on LJ there a button one clicks that chooses whether you want your entry pages to be in your journal style or in the basic style. Where the hell is that damn thing? NVM, found it!

(And PS - I hope to reengage with DW this weekend. I have the Seed Account, and this has been a very, um, persuasive week.)
wordplay: (Knitting)

I like how you're predictable. If I say 'knitting', you perk up so cutely. Here: 'knitting'. WHEE!

I mentioned knitting!fic on Twitter, and several of you poked your heads up with a "wait, what?"

It's here - mostly Carole and Kurt gen, with a good bit of Kurt/Blaine as seen through Carole's eyes. Silly, one-day, LJ-outage fic - Carole teaches Kurt how to knit. :D

Also, while I am here: first LJ was down, then it had been back up for about 15 minutes when we lost power, and when the power came back the cable never did. Apparently somebody cut something they weren't supposed to, and they're saying it'll be back by tomorrow morning. IMAGINE HOW THRILLED I WAS TO HEAR THAT. TOMORROW MORNING!? **rages on in her modern, urban, entitled way**

NOT my best day to work from home, and coffee shop wireless kind of blows, not least because it's a many mile radius that is without internet and we're all sort of freaking out, and I didn't bring a power cable so I'm going to have to run back home, and I am EPICALLY behind on comments and, in short: I fail at technology. *sigh*

And! I went to a visiting day for the new department, and y'all, they all LIKE each other so much! They fund everybody for 5 years, so there's no competition among the grad students and everybody is so supportive, and they're all genuinely happy to be where they are - like, people complain about faculty or whatever, like you do, but they're all so glad to be there and feel so lucky and, just - I am so happy. This all bodes very, very well for the next 5-8 years of my life. :D

Finally: kids both back at school, never been so relieved to drop some people off somewhere, you have no idea.

Mountain Goats

It's after 2 am and I'm going to be a wreck tomorrow because my body is on this 6 am wakeup schedule that I can't seem to shake, but we've only been home for an hour and even a mediocre show will keep me up this long and that show? Jesus god. A Mountain Goats show is a special thing anyway, especially with an opener that winning (Megafaun), but he did The Sign and at one point there was a balloon dancing around the room during a song about the Khmer Rouge and we all got to yell Hail Satan and the band was just so happy and John liked our side of the room best because it was generally populated by maniacs, but short maniacs so we could all still see, and if anybody has a bootleg of "You Were Cool" please hook a girl up already, because it was so great and it's unreleased still.

So here, let me just fangirl for a moment more:

In which I ENTHUSE all over you )

A (mostly) Glee-free entry

(1) Sick, sick, we are all sick.

(2) Kid update: O spends every free moment either drawing or playing the piano. He's... he has so much happening in his head, and so many pencils in his pocket, and he's on it. He's going to do a rowing camp this summer, which he's super-excited about. A, for her part, continues to be doing her level best to grow into some real-life version of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl, which is a little worrisome, but she is so her own person that I can't get too freaked out about it - yet, although I reserve the right, etc. Oh, also: we just saw the ophthalmologist and her eyes are good; I'm absolutely tickled. Just one more note on the kids: I am a so much better parent to kids of this age than I was when they were babies. I just... frankly, I bore easily, and they're way more interesting now. It's harder, of course, but I just enjoy their company so much more. It's kind of great, honestly. Strong recommend on the Kids front, if you're leaning that way. If you're leaning the other way: omg they're so expensive! Are you insane?

(3) That... I mean, really? That's all that's going on. There's a reason I'm not posting much; it's spring break and all of my research is in a really fallow period right now, and all I really want to do is hang out and write stupid stories about high school characters. (And, between us: I am beginning to grow a bit bored. Not, like, horribly so, but I'm feeling it. That's OK; that was the point, right?)

(4) No travel on the horizon, which is OK; things will heat up over the summer, as they always do. Feb/March was so crazy that it's nice to think that I will likely spend every night in April in my bed - unless we do a theatre trip to NYC, as has been discussed.

(5) I think I'm just sort of holding my breath for the fall, to be honest. Still adjusting to the idea of this new intellectual incarnation. It's exciting, and overwhelming, and terrifying, and it still doesn't feel RIGHT but it no longer feels so horribly WRONG, either. Baby steps, no fear, etc.

(6) Icon chosen in hope and anticipation.

(7) Hey, y'all. ♥

GLEE! This is not the icon I wanted to use

But I've already been taken to task for spoilers last night on Twitter (and Imma say it again - if you want to be unspoiled for something, just stay away from Twitter. It's in real time and there are no cuts possible and expecting people to control themselves in that environment is grossly unfair. It's a communal space, an absolute fucking free-for-all, and expectations need to be reasonable for them to ever stand a chance of being met.) so everything else I'm going to say is going to be under a cut. BECAUSE I AM AWESOME.

help_japan, and carrying on

Still sick. Feeling a little better today, though - I think it was the bitching and subsequent comfort on twitter that did it, so thanks.

I haven't talked about everything going on in Japan; it's just - it's all too much, isn't it? (And surely I can't be the only American feeling some kind of retroactive guilt about Hiroshima and Nagasaki this week, can I? It just - the planet does enough to us, surely, without us stepping in and fucking things up more. I know it's probably silly, but there you are.)

But I'm feeling it, it's just a lot, and so in addition to sending money, what the hell - I'm throwing my hat in the ring for [livejournal.com profile] help_japan. (I probably shouldn't; I still owe [livejournal.com profile] kaalee three dishcloths from the last one of these we did, but that WILL get done and maybe they'll be extra exciting for having been spread out a little? Anyway, we try, etc.)

My listing is here, if anybody's interested. If there's something that you know that's in my wheelhouse but that I haven't offered, feel free to ask for it.

(no subject)

Am in London with [livejournal.com profile] misscake, [livejournal.com profile] evil_erato, [livejournal.com profile] kaalee, [livejournal.com profile] incapricious, [livejournal.com profile] kerryblaze, [livejournal.com profile] meggitymeg and [livejournal.com profile] star98hope, seeing plays and eating RIDICULOUS numbers of crumpets. We're staying at the flats we like near King's Cross and it's working out well - I don't like reccing them publicly (because dude, you have to protect your finds!) but if you're ever looking to plan a larger, longer stay in London, hit me up because they are very happy-making. And I am enjoying the hell out of spending this really relaxed and easy time with these wonderful women. ♥

Tea at the Dorchester yesterday, then Frankenstein (Benedict Cumberbatch did go on as the Creature last night, which was in question as he's been sick this week) and it HAS improved during the preview period, at least the pacing was better, but there are still problems with that script - people seemed to really like it, though, which made me really happy! Today I'm having brunch with [livejournal.com profile] aegeus, [livejournal.com profile] titanic_days and [livejournal.com profile] malachan, which I'm looking forward to, then Our Private Life with Colin Morgan. It's been a SUPER quick in-and-out trip, but god I love being back here. Leaving will be hard on Sunday, as I'm about to head into some major life change territory and I don't know when I'll be back.

I feel like I'm forgetting something. Back home tomorrow evening! ♥ ♥ ♥

Fic: Glee: Kitchen stories

OK, so I NEVER post fic here, but this is Hummel gen and I think it might be the kind of thing that anybody who's watched the show might enjoy, so what the hell. A warning that I have been crying over this stupid little story for something like 3 days; I tried very hard to avoid being too emotionally manipulative but it's... it's pretty sad. Mostly I just had to get it out. :)) (AND I AM SORRY IT'S SONGFICCY. I know, but... it was a thing. Sue me.)

Title: Kitchen Stories
Rating: G
Word Count: around 1700
Summary: On the day they move, Burt and Kurt stay behind to clean out the old house.

For [livejournal.com profile] misscake, who I've kept weepy right along with me while I worked out how to best unfold this scene, and with many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] aelora who served valiantly as on-the-nose-o-meter. This song has been stuck in my head for weeks now - should be obvious, but if you don't recognize it let me know. :)

Looks like I need a Burt Hummel icon, because I am IN. LOVE. with writing for him.

Glee-related mini temper tantrum

Unpopular opinion: Y'all, Gwyneth Paltrow has gone from somebody I found sort of generally cute and harmless to somebody who completely creeps me out. And she's coming back to "Glee" next week and her version of "Landslide" is FINE, it's totally fine, except that I like that song and I don't want her on it. And, however complicated my feelings about "Glee" are, it's still MY SHOW. And I don't want her there.

So there.

And I don't like the two new songs, either. SO DOUBLE THERE.

And this is the thing about Glee: for everything about it that makes me clap my hands and squeal, there's at least one other thing that makes me groan and frown and facepalm. DO BETTER.

Glee art!

I can't even talk about this episode yet. Maybe tomorrow.

But for tonight: so, earlier this week, I wrote a truly pornographic piece of fic that has the absurd line:

"Oh my god, I just reverse cowboy'd you!" and he leaned forward to hide his face against Blaine's own, pressing their foreheads together and feeling the blush flare higher as Blaine chuckled a bit and wrapped his hand back in his hair.

And I sat in my room and laughed, oh my god, because these boys are ridiculous, and that was fun enough.

And then, out of all the inspirational pornographic images in that story, somebody decided to illustrate that very moment.

So, yeah. Fandom is awesome. :))

Lady Porn Day

And now, for a complete change in topic (check out my multitudes, bitches!): it's Lady Porn Day! How are you going to celebrate?

(I mean, I realize that on LJ, EVERY day is Lady Porn Day. Think of this as the one day of the year that the rest of the internet joins the party. To celebrate, [livejournal.com profile] filamentmag has posted some of the female-shot erection shots that made such publishing scuttlebutt last year, over here - these are NSFW, obv.)

Too much personal growth for one year

The kids have a two hour delay this morning, and I climbed into bed with A to have a bit of a cuddle while she slowly woke up. She's at such a charming age, and as she woke up we lay in bed and plotted the first part of her epic Harry Potter fanfiction, starring Albus Potter and his two best friends. ♥

But before she woke up all the way she lay there and dozed and I just watched her, staring at her face. She just... god, I love her.

The thing about parenting is that it makes you examine so much of who you are and what you think about the world. )

You guys are so awesome. Thanks for the many congratulations. ♥ ♥ ♥ I'm so excited, and there is so much planning to do! And I will start it today, because I have 2.5 weeks of sick time to take off before I leave my job in July, and this head cold has moved to my chest, so *cough cough* I'm staying home.

I've been not really posting actual Glee content here; let's break that trend, shall we?

Glee thoughts )

Also on the Glee front: I have four startlingly good seats to the Philly show, for me, A, [livejournal.com profile] misscake and [livejournal.com profile] r_becca, so that should be fantastic. And I also, in a fit of whimsy, paid an obscene amount of money for a VIP ticket to the Detroit show, so at some point after the next England trip (omg, ladies: most of us leave 2 weeks from today!) I will start thinking about that. Michigan is a state I've never visited before, and a tiny part of me hopes that b/c he went to school there, Darren Criss will do the meet & greet there, because that would be entertaining. Also, there are Tim Horton's in Michigan, and so Timbits! And even a [livejournal.com profile] tropes, who I haven't seen since we both got completely wasted in a Mexican restaurant in Manhattan in June fucking 2004. Damn.

Also, you know what? I'm quitting my job, because I'm going back to grad school.

Again with the embarrassment

I just realized that I have written over 40,000 words of Kurt/Blaine in 2011. That's 6 weeks, people.

I think I need to just go cold turkey or something.
wordplay: (Do Not Annoy the Fangirls)

I <3 the internet. And fangirls. But especially fangirls on the internet.

So, actually, as much as you might think I'm all "blah blah blah Kurt/Blaine Glee omg blah blah blah" all the time, I actually don't talk about it much here considering how much of my brainspace it's taking up. I'm obsessed - crazy, batshit, deep-end obsessed, and I am churning out fic like a madwoman. (Seriously, ask [livejournal.com profile] misscake. She is a trooper and my alltime faaaaaavorite. ♥)

And I? Am on the light end of things. Because if you think I'm obsessed, and you think Glee can manufacture drama for days for no apparent plot reason, well, then you have never seen the loyal fans over at [livejournal.com profile] kurt_blaine. The last few weeks have been a nonstop shitstorm, what with everything going on, and now there's an Ausiello blind item about a beloved gay character who thinks he might be bi, and there's been a tip over at AfterElton that it's Blaine, and the fangirls? ARE LOSING IT.

And, like, I totally get it. That would really suck, in a lot of ways, and it'd be one more instance of massive failure of the head guys over there to write their way out of a paper bag without pissing off a whole bunch of people. (Epic disability!fail is the camel-breaking straw that springs immediately to mind but god, there have been so many others.) I'll believe it when I see it, of course? But, you know, whatever - we're not pretending this show is actually really *good*, or that we love it for the writing or the sensitivity or the internal consistency.

Which is why, when this thread made me giggle uncontrollably, I knew I had to share it with you guys.

Dashing off a quick post before I run out the door

I got back from London on Monday and have been running ever since - I missed a week of work and classes and catching up is just brutal.

So, yeah, I was in London for a week, staying with [livejournal.com profile] aegeus and [livejournal.com profile] titanic_days (who are lovely hosts ♥ and have a great flat and I adore the area where they live - I spent a day just knocking from shop to coffee shop to shop in their area and it was lovely). [livejournal.com profile] meggitymeg came down for a few days, too, and we spent an afternoon with [livejournal.com profile] malachan and I had lunch with Reene-who-is-no-longer-on-LJ (but did send her best to those of you who knew her!) and I saw a whole, whole lot of plays.

Quickly, because I have to run off and read 300 pages of theory by 6:30p. Thoughts about the plays I saw while I was there )

So, yeah, good week. And now I have to run away because I am so overbooked this week. Love you guys! ♥

All hail [livejournal.com profile] bookwench31 and <lj site="livejournal.com" user="jumperk

who have let us come to their apartment and soak up their heat and electricity (*jumps on wireless, recharges everything*) and totally bogart their Wii. And we're going to be here for hours, because I think we're going to order pizza and stay here until it's time to put our kids in their (cold, cold) beds, because our house is cold and dark and boring. Did I mention that it's cold? Because it totally is.

At least we have a gas water heater

We lost power yesterday afternoon/evening and I'm really not sure when we'll get it back; everywhere else in the neighborhood has had it for a few hours and our continued darkness is disheartening. This would be a more manageable hassle if I weren't trying to pack for a week out of town. In better news, though, the airports seem to have their act together and a Sunday departure now seems doable.

Also, we dug out and left, only to come back to discover that they'd plowed again and I had to dig myself back into the driveway. And I'm keeping my phone charged by running the Prius intermittently, which seems to defeat the point of driving a Prius.

At least our house smells really good, because O thought that what I needed for Christmas was a selection of Yankee candles, and they've received quite a bit of use in the last 24 hours. I was a bit "o..kay" when i originally received them, but with the benefit of more knowledge: well done, kid!

Stuff and snow

(1) Snow day! On account of, you know, actual snow. Not a lot, but I don't think anybody expected the inch or so of icy slush we had on the ground as of 5 am, and since everything was going to close early anyway for the storms we're expecting tonight, and it's been a pretty uneventful winter so far, they just called it; even the university, which NEVER closes when I want it to, opened at 10a and closed at 3p. Now I just have to hope they'll shut down completely tomorrow, as I have a 2p class that I'd rather not venture out for if it can be helped.

(1a) Is anybody planning to go to the Dupont Circle snowball fight tonight? Pro: whee! Con: brrr! Also, you just sort of KNOW that everybody will traipse down there and then the escalators will go out.

(2) I DID go out today, though, for a 6a trip to the grocery store for the essentials, i.e. a bag of Oreos and 50 lbs of ice melt.

(3) And then I mostly just hung around, turned out some excessively lyrical Kurt/Blaine romantiporn for the porn battle, and willed the snow to start back up. (Which it did, actually; just as I posted this it switched over from hail/sleet/freezing rain/whatever to proper snow again. I think.) I feel like I'm writing way too much K/Bl, and it's all pwp (because I have my own personal braincanon in the hopper for an exchange and it won't see the light of day for a while so I'm in a hands-tied sort of place), but it feels nice to be writing and I'm not really feeling anything else. *pokes at it*

(4) After putting the problem of my entryway to you guys, [livejournal.com profile] kaalee recommended a bench for the kids' backpacks, and although it wouldn't fit in the spot she suggested (which was the only spot you could see from the photos, so fair enough), it DOES fit somewhere else, and the cheapy $70 black bench we ordered from Target just arrived and it looks fantastic - the backpacks fit perfectly. I'm so pleased, so thank you! :D Pictures at some point soon.

(5) Also pictures of A, because she and Marc are going to a girl scouts event on Friday night and we went dress shopping last weekend and the dresses are ADORABLE, but less baby girl adorable and more, like, omg she's growing up! adorable. Her favorite purchase was a silver sequin tank dress - she jumped up and down when I told her we could buy it. :))

(6) Assuming the weather doesn't do something daffy and fubar everything, on Sunday I leave for London. I should probably make sure I have enough tights. Also, pick stuff up that you guys need. [livejournal.com profile] aegeus, I thought there was talk of Bisquick and Dawn at some point? My record-keeping is crap right now, so if there's stuff I need to bring for you, please let me know (again, I know, I'm sorry). And [livejournal.com profile] malachan, do you have a better sense of how your next week is going to look?

(7) I need an icon that represents general ennui. What is the pictorial representation of 'bored blah'? This old school bratty child will have to do.

(8) OK, DC, I say we storm the local TV stations with snowballs and pitchforks and destroy all copies of that damned Koons.com ("Koons dot com!") ad, because oh my god.
