(1) We had such a great time at the release party last night. The weather was perfect and after a weird start, the dinner venue turned out to be perfect and the book distribution went extremely well. Also, Meg and I spotted this unbelievably cute Borders employee dressed as Percy (Weasley jumper and all. In July. In Texas, so extra points for dedication in costuming) and after a moment of breathless fangirling and truly absurd giggling, we cornered him for a snap with him - pics to follow. Yay geeks! There were 18 of us at dinner and we had a fabulous (and only slightly drunken) time. There was another Potter group there and ours was way more fun. :>

(2) Oh how I love Harry Potter. ♥

(3) This is absolutely my favorite book; it's displaced Prisoner of Azkaban.

(4) I loved the shippy stuff. OK, a lot of this is because I don't have a stake in the whole R/Hr v. H/Hr thing; also because I entered the fandom after OotP and so I never lived through the horror of GT and SQ at the height of their obnoxiousness, so any desire to see them eat dirt and other unsavory things is extremely minimal and mostly indignance on behalf of my friends. But I thought it was adorably done. Frankly, I thought this Hermione was perfectly in character - after all, she's always been a teenaged girl who couldn't stand to lose. She's also had a long history of wielding great determination and personally derived power in really clumsy ways. I absolutely recognized her. The H/G did come a little bit out of nowhere to me, but it made Harry so damned happy, and what's not to like about that? I honestly have no opinion at Remus/Tonks - that gets a big whatever from me, as does Bill/Fleur.

(5) Has falling in love completely removed Bill Weasley's ability to speak? And also, where is Charlie? Is he in the country at the moment or what?

(6) A largely Grawp-free zone! Although I am tired of reading tear-stained letters from Hagrid, I found the image of Hagrid moving Dumbledore's body an incredibly moving one, even if it did occur off page.

(7) Such a funny book. I sniggered at "Mollywobbles" and Phlegm and the U-No-Poo like an eight-year-old boy, but "Abstinence!" is the joke that has stuck with me, as I'm not entirely sure it wasn't JKR trying to tell us to cool it with the porn.

(8) Harry/Draco shippers - oh, fuck restraint. Let's party. I think we've earned it. *raises a glass*

(9) Percy/Hermione shippers (aka Meg) - woot! Ship not dead! I'll take it.

(10) Am still processing the 'Harry as horcrux' stuff and I'm not really sure what I think, other than to think that if he is, dementors will most certainly be part of the solution to the problem. All that soul-sucking has to come in useful some time. So I don't think it means certain death for him, even if he is.

(11) I was spoiled for the Draco/Snape/DD plot line, and when Julie told me, it made me cry. I was no less moved reading it on the page, and I find Snape a more intriguing character than ever. Still processing this, a lot.

(12) Slugwhatsit is fabulous. I just really liked him - I thought he was interesting and deliciously Slytherin in a way that's not at all dark. I worried a few weeks ago about JKR's handling of moral ambiguity and, in general, am much encouraged here.

(13) In general, I like the contrast of OotP and HBP. In OotP, Harry learned some backstory on people he loved that made them less sympathetic and therefore more human. In HBP, he learned some backstory on people that he hated that gave them more understanding and actually inspired a little compassion. (And if he also learned that Tom Riddle was once a hot piece of ass and that evil is bad for your skin tone, more's the better.) These are important parts of growing up and they're important parts of learning to truly love and I'm so glad to see both pieces there.

Good lord. 13 talking points and another list is really rather enough, isn't it, and I feel like I just scratched the surface.

We're having a great time here, although we're all exhausted and are lazing around until brunch tomorrow - I think we all need some quiet time to just sit and drink and talk and make LJ entries :D and just veg.

Although I've bought every new book on the day of publication from PoA on (and would you believe I've loved these books since 99 and didn't even know there was such a thing as online fandom till just after OotP came out?), this is my first book release while in fandom. Thank you for letting me be a part of this community for it. It's been really wonderful. *loves you*
