See how I am not at work! I just can't focus today; I got some pretty upsetting family news this weekend and the place is dead for Columbus Day and my boss is out sick so concentration? Just really not happening. I can write up IRB paperwork from home - RIGHT?!

Let's talk about baby names. SEBASTIAN! What a great name. It was on our short list, because I saw "Neverending Story" WAY too many times during my formative years, and the way the princess says "Bastian!" with heartbreak in her voice as the island is crumbling beneath her feet made quite an impact. But we were already saddling our kid with four names (FN MN MyLN Marc'sLN) and both of our last names have three syllables and that was just way, WAY too much name for one small kid to bear. And A came thisclose to being named "Eleanor", because Marc liked Ellie and I liked Nora and, you know, WIN. She ended up with her name because she goes by a v. common nickname that's a short form of her name and from birth on, she just LOOKED like the name fit her. She still does.

The best thing about not having another baby might well be not having to choose another name. Boys are HARD to name for me, and if we had another one, he might be Baby Boy Marc'sLN for a long, long time. I seem to remember that we liked Evan and Jasper and Finn a lot at the time, and this was 8 years ago before all of those names were overused quite so much, at least in the US.

I'm really liking Ryan, Aidan and Christopher for boys right now. I'm an eighth Irish and I feel I get to exploit this and use pretty Irish names. As for girls I love Alisha, Faith and Maia. So not so Irish there :D

I love my name and I'm still glad my parents picked it. I was so very nearly Kate or Julia.

Funny you should mention this as last night Jeremy and I were discussing names (prompted by his pregnant sister's chosen names - not us!!) Specifically we mentioned Sebastian and Eleanor/Ellie but we talked about how we could never name a kid that now because Sebastian and Ellie are taj_mahal07's cats!! And, well, Sebastian is my fault because I loved the name and suggested it for the kitty.

That's all I have now because last night we were going through and mocking names (and spellings) we don't like. :-P

I was just thinking about baby names the other day. Not that I have any reason to be. *grins*
But the two names that have been on my "what I would name my child list" the most consistently are:
Boy: St. John (Sinjin) I've just loved that name for forever. I have no idea where that love came from. Possibly my child would kill me.
Girl: Josephine. (My mom's middle name is Josette, for her dad, Joe. Everyone in our family calls her Josie. I'd like to use Josephine one day, both for my mother and my grandfather.)

Hee. We had the opposite problem. We were pretty close on boy names, and had a longish short list from which we chose after meeting the boys in question because I cannot cannot cannot name a child I have not met. I will be interested to see whether STBX's newbaby with The Girl is named before she is born.

But had either of ours been a girl, she would probably still be "Hey You," because I was saying Cordelia! Emilia! Araminta! and he was saying Britney! Tiffani! Didi!

My nieces are "Graziella" and "Bellina" shortened to Grazi and Lina. Italian? Why noooooo there is no Italian in their blood at all! (my brother and I are three-quarters, and the girls are a bit less, as their mama is only half).

Although, we are quite proud that Grazi, at six-in-January, can write her own name, with all the letters going the proper direction. Poor kiddie, between her first and last she has *three* 'z's in her name... Lina only has to contend with the two in her last name.

And I will never ever find anything like keychains, pencils, wooden door plaques with either of their names on them. It is something that will have to be special ordered or made.

My mom's name is Eleanor - for Mrs. Roosevelt. :)

If I ever have a boy, I'd like to name him with both my grandmother's maiden names - Mitchell Wells. (Of course I'm flexible depending on the as yet unknown last name of whichever lucky guy gets to father this imaginary child.) I don't really know for a girl. My maternal grandmother's name was Brower (interesting story), which is kind of neat and has the bonus of being unusual yet easy to spell.

I've never yet had kids, so I have loaned out a lot of my favorites to cousins and nieces and pets: Rachel, Briana, Zoe, Alexander, and so on.

I am still holding on to Adrienne, Claire (for my Aunt Clara), Renee, and Nicole; Andrew, Brendan, Joseph (my dad's middle name), and Zachary. Mae/May is my mom's, sister's, and grandmother's middle name, so I expect I would use that somewhere.

That's eight names, and I can't imagine having more than two children (especially since I'm 35 and would have to really work at having just one, at this point.) But the names are in abeyance anyway. ;)

Baby names, hmmm. Was talking to a friend due next Monday and she told me the name she's picked, which I don't like at all, lol, and that got me thinking about what I do like.

I find I have more boys names than girls.

Boys: Daniel, Julian, Rhydian, Ben, Harry, and Luke
Girls: Emma, Jessica, Aurora, Evelyn (Evie), and Hermione, which has grown on me a lot. I do like Lily, too, but not sure it suits an adult.

I have this love affair with the name Adelaide (and call her Addie) for a girl. It's v. old fashioned sounding, but I <3 it.

For a boy? Daniel. Or...urgh I don't know!

Peyton for a girl. It's my middle name, and a common middle name in the family (though I am the first girl -- it was my grandfather's middle name and his father's middle name and on and on back to like, the one who married Thomas Jefferson's cousin). Since I figure she won't have my last name, that'll be her contribution from my family. I love Eleanor, and there are lots of great nicknames for it, but you're right, you have to have the Right Sort of Girl to name her that. I love Agatha, too, but I can't imagine actually doing that to my child. Maybe the dog.

For a boy, I love Harry. Yes, after Potter. When I was with M, I realized that wouldn't work with his last name -- it sounded *awful*. I love Henry, too, and Daniel, and Taylor for either a boy or a girl.

I've been thinking pretty hard about this because of the plan of impending Moonybaby next year, and so I have The List. I've pretty much shortened it down to a few choices, but I'm still waffling.

Zelda or Coraline for a girl. I also like Abigail, Isobel and Audrey. Elanor is on my list because of Lord of the Rings, oddly enough. :D I'm pretty much firm on Coraline though. I really, really love that name.

Charlie or Theodore for a boy. I really like the name Theodore. I've also considered Emmet, Gavin and Jack.

Our first son's name came pretty easily. It was on the short list, and then he was born with red hair. Plus it goes really well with our Scandinavian last name. We ended up fighting over son #2's name, because basically we were out of names--though Finn and Evan were on my list, the husband didn't go for them. His brother and his brother's wife ended up naming their 2nd son Finn (totally independent of us) so it worked out. My husband had kind of a thing for names that are really words, like Chance. Ugh.
