So I'm reading the Franzen book, even though I'm among the masses who find him irritating as hell, yadda yadda. We all know this story by now.
And I find that I am enjoying the hell out of this book. I never caught traction with The Corrections, but I think I was perfectly poised for Freedom; I told
ellen_fremedon a few weeks ago that I was itching to read something modern and American and very keenly observed, some kind of of-the-moment Austenish thing, and this is pretty much hitting those buttons.
But mostly, I came over to talk about this here because, look:
"Serious fans always need to feel uniquely connected to the object of their fandom; they jealously guard those points of connection, however tiny or imaginary, that justify the feeling of uniqueness."
And god, don't we know it.
