wordplay: (FNL - Coach Taylor)
Home sick again, this time tending to my oldest, who joined us in bed at 12:30 am with a scratchy throat and a 101F fever. Whee. :-|

So here's something, since I'm going to be around-ish most of the day today. Friday Night Lights begins its second season in the US this Friday night, and it's a pivotal time for the show. There's a very good article in the New Yorker about the show and what's so wonderful about it, but I know this can't be the first time you've heard how great this show is. And yet, I know that most of you aren't watching it, and most of you won't tune in on Friday night to see what the second season will bring. And damn, there's a LOT of television in the world, so I can hardly blame you for that - I don't watch AI or SPN or any one of the zillion things so many of you love. But what I really don't understand is WHY people aren't at least checking out FNL, because I don't know a single person who watched some of it and didn't want to watch more. The buzz is consistently good, so what's stopping you?

This is something I don't do, generally - I'm asking for a chance to convince you otherwise. Tell me WHY you haven't checked out FNL and I'll either hear you and nod and go, "yes, perfectly reasonable, thanks for sharing!" OR I will give you more information and try, in my completely non-pressuring and utterly respectful way :D, to convince you to at least give it an hour of your life.

Alternatively, you could just cave now and tell me you'll try to watch it and it'll save all of us a whole lot of trouble. :D :D :D

So, yeah, this is really a post for the Americans. Is S1 showing in any other markets yet?

Kid #1 has strep, too. What a shocker. I got lucky, though, and got the 3-day course of abx. He has to drink the pink stuff. Ew.

Previous generation iPod shuffles for $50, fyi.

Someone contacted me about translating some of my fic into Spanish. I'm kind of ridiculously flattered. In other fic news, things that are intriguing me for Yuletide include: HIMYM, FNL, Freaks and Geeks, Fray, Wonderfalls, Notting Hill, Wilby Wonderful, Neal Stephenson (omg this scares the CRAP out of me in terms of writing, but how exciting!), and approximately 232083 other things. How on EARTH am I supposed to choose what to ask for?

I mentioned that I got a Completely Pointless Promotion a few weeks back, right? Last week I got a Completely Pointless Award, which came with the bonus embarrassment of having to stand up there while my boss talked about me. Which, I mean, it was nice, and I'm glad they thought of me and appreciated my work and all that, and I got a CERTIFICATE AND EVERYTHING, (woo. hoo.) but still. Uncomfortable.

When I was in high school, we used to be farmed out to local department stores to do their annual inventories as fundraisers for our high school organizations, usually band and drill team. I'd sort of forgotten about it until I was in the grocery store today and saw a woman just tearing it up on a 10key. Is this a normal kind of thing for fundraisers? Our other big band fundraiser, besides selling stuff, was an oyster supper every spring - that was kind of a big deal; I was always able to sell a whole bunch of tickets to people at church. Do school groups still do fish frys and chicken spaghetti suppers? What are other big high school fundraisers that do not involve selling things? (entertainment books, chocolate, wrapping paper omg)
