Whee. So much fun. Got sleep! Today is absolutely my best programming day; there's a really promising keynote at noon, followed by a long fandom studies session all afternoon. It's actually scheduled opposite [livejournal.com profile] emmagrant01's H/D roundtable, which she has some amazing ideas for and which I'm really looking forward to seeing, so I'm going to have to figure out how to make that happen.

Everybody else is posting really good reviews of things that have occurred (and if you're interested, my day yesterday sort of follows the basic shape of [livejournal.com profile] heidi8, but where she's in actual, you know, SESSIONS, read "hanging around with numerous t00bs" for my activities), but I think mine would be really boring to you. The short version of yesterday: went to the FA RoR (and the saga of even just the drama of getting the space reserved is something that you lovely people here have been spared, although I've subjected seemingly the entire conference to it at one point or another) which actually went off well (all hail the waitstaff!). This was an enormous relief, actually, so I spent most of the rest of the day happy. And then there was this whole extended evening of hanging out with just a TON of people I already mostly knew, and that was pretty great because some of them I already knew reasonably well and they always make me happy, but others of them I knew barely at all and it was really fantastic to spend some more time talking. I am just so shit at meeting new people, though; I continue to headdesk on this. Help me!

Personal update: I'm still coughing, and stuffy, and my voice is still just shot all to hell - it's terribly ragged and spent most of yesterday randomly breaking. I'm going to try to remind myself to try not to talk today, as I really want to still have a voice for the Percy panel tomorrow afternoon. And I slept. And last night there was really fantastic traditional Mexican food (AMAZING sea bass omgyum) so I had some good protein, which is good as I've spent most of the conference living off peanut butter cups, cough drops and cider.

These are actually really difficult to write in such a way that's not sort of weird and namedroppy, but I want a record for myself and the way I'm spending my days is pretty much shaped by the people I'm spending time with, so I'm keeping a rather haphazard mental list of people who've come through the room parties the last two nights, as that seems to be a reasonably good indicator of who I've been spending time with. But now I have to get in the shower because Meg is coming down for breakfast and I need to shower, so more later. :>

Ooo, is today the Henry Jenkins one? Gah, I wanted to go to TWH just for that out of all the programming. *g* Post notes!

Hope you feel better as the day goes on!

It was the only keynote I went to and it was fantastic. He talked a lot about the book he has coming out next year and about how the balance of power and responsibility has so shifted for fandoms and participatory culture in the last 20 years. He talked about HP fandom as it relates to the empowerment of children and the decentralization of education. There was SO MUCH in just that hour, and although very little of it was stuff we haven't discussed or thought about it before, it was very well presented and just really an amazing talk. He's a very effective speaker and very amiable. I totally want his job.

He also mentioned that Textual Poachers only sold around 4000 copies, which seems ridiculously low to me. I still don't really know what to do with that.

Wow, that does seem unbelievably low. Was that the number just for when it initially came out? I'm guessing, but academic and popular interest in fandoms wasn't as high then, which could sort of explain it...

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the talk!

I saw this article in yahoo and read this bit
"Among those attending was actor Chris Rankin, who plays Percy Weasley in the three Potter films."
and totally thought of you.
