[livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon and I have been talking for a while about putting together a large DC "Deathly Hallows" book release party, and it's time to start properly planning that. This will be a welcome-all-comers kind of thing, meant to bring all parts of the local Potter fandom together to celebrate the release of the last book.

So! By 'party' we really mean 'drinks!' and the idea is to find somewhere to get together earlier in the evening and then finish up with the book portion of the evening at Politics and Prose. In order to begin the planning, we ask you to use this post to do two things:

(1) Have an idea of where we should have drinks that's close to P&P? Leave it here.

(2) And if you think you'll want to join us, let me know here. You're not committing to anything too firmly; we just need to begin to get some sense of numbers before we can move forward.

Have something else to add? Please do so! Have any brilliant ideas? Leave them!

Yay Harry!

*raises hand* I'd definitely be interested. I've also been contemplating movie things...

Why did you have to move up north?? I want to go to a book release party but I don't think there's one down here and it was a gorgeous day but I had to work inside and I don't have any toast.

*sulks*

*raises hand* Though I'm not even sure I know where P&P is, let alone where to have drinks... :P

I'm in! Well, probably at least for the drinks portion. Then I'll have to rush over to the release party at the bookshop where my son and sister will be waiting.

A note about P&P too, the parking completely sucks so you may want to keep that in mind.

It's not that bad if you go back into the neighborhood a block or two-- it's just right along Connecticut that's a nightmare.

Although, admittedly, I did spend an embarrassing amount of time trying to find my car after the Pratchett signing this past October. In my defense, I have a terrible sense of direction and it was a block over from where I thought I was.

I will keep this in mind. I have not yet decided if I will go back up to NYC or not for the weekend. *torn* Last time it was easy because I hadn't met most of the locals in the area yet

I was actually going to post to hp_dcmetro today and see what people's plans were. I'm in if you'll have me!

No suggestions for drinks around P&P, isn't that area pretty dead? Maybe Bethesda or Woodley Park...

I'm tentatively in, though I may just chicken out and stay completely and utterly unspoiled by staying in my bunker house and waiting for Amazon to come driving up to my door.

Yay! But I am making a rule, a special Heidi rule just for you - no FictionAlley stuff. I'm serious; I want this to be a really fun thing for everybody and FA is what it is and I want this to be a space that's completely away from all of that. You will just have to be that fun girl Heidi who really loves Harry Potter; no representing, no swag, NOTHIN'.

Do you think you can deal? *grins at you*

Oh, totally. That's exactly what I want to do. I actually never have "worked" during a book release event (other than to toss some postcards on a table set up for that sort of thing last time in LA) because the books are the whole purpose behind this for me, and I need the space to just be a reader and a fan.

The movies are different to me, for some reason, and that's why I've done the IMAX events for the last two - and I think for this one as well. But no, not the books.

it sounds good to me! there is a thai place across the street from the uptown, which if i'm not mistaking my dc geography is nearby, that has good food and great drinks. :)

Well duh.

I'd probably fly in late Thursday night (as per usual) and out Sunday afternoon. I vote for drinks, book, brunch and then go home, with some yummy canon discussion in there a la HBP. Wherever we choose to do that is fine by me. The more light, fun and informal, the better. I'm looking forward to meeting new people! :D

I think what Ellen and I were thinking is that the way to do this would be to have the big event Friday night before the release and then everybody can do their own thing with their own 'people' for their post-read discussion. And like I said, I'll have the new house, so... :) OMG I can do brunch!

I'd definitely be in; I was hoping that someone would get a DC crowd together for the release.

The closest drinky places I can think of to Politics & Prose are in Cleveland Park (Nanny O'Briens and Ireland's 4 Fields), but I don't spend a whole lot of time in the area, so other people will probably have better ideas.

...wow, there are a lot more DC-area fen than I'd thought.

Which is certainly good news! And I work right by the zoo, which is only a little ways down Connecticut from P&P, so I'd be more than happy to location-scout.

Theoretically I'm interested... realistically, P&P is in a hard neighborhood to get to and I always end up bailing of plans to go there for that reason. :( Sad but true. For HBP, I went to Olssens in Courthouse and likely that's where I'll be again.

:( I will be in Florida. And, sadly, under 21 still for the next ten months. (Though with my new medication, I can't drink any alcohol at all, so it doesn't matter.) Have fun! I'll be jealously reading updates.

I like the idea, though it seems a bit odd to leave NY. If we did it, [livejournal.com profile] bowdlerized and I would need to at least know the cat situation, and find someplace to crash (possibly motel...)

I'm so nervous about it I can't really even squee.

I'd sure *like* to attend. It really depends on how difficult it will be to get home.
