OMG, y'all, the dollar. *pets its hair and readjusts its oxygen mask*

1.4 against the Euro! Holding steady right at 2 GBP. Even trading against the Canadian loonie. (Because y'all know how dearly I love Canada but doesn't that seem just WRONG somehow?)

I was whining to [livejournal.com profile] longtimegone last night, reminiscing about the days when we were 1.4 against the pound and you could buy 5 or 6 francs to the dollar. At the moment it feels like we'll never see that again. *is woeful* We're planning to take the kids to England next summer, and I'm hopeful we can still do it, but the exchange really hurts.

*frets with you*

We're planning a similar trip. Luckily, we'll be able to stay with friends to save on hotel costs because it would be nice to, you know, to be able to eat!

See, we're now at the point with our family where I will no longer inflict the four of us on anybody who doesn't share DNA with one of us, and especially considering the size of flats in London, it just doesn't seem like a good idea. I need to start looking now for flat rentals, because the best combinations of cheap and good go quickly.

I mean, yay? But ouch.

Oy. Even against the loonie?? That's just ... wrong. Deeply wrong.

Parity with the loonie = certain sign of looming apocalypse.

Actually, I'm mostly joking, but somehow it does feel like just more v. depressing news about how much we suck. Even our currency is depressed!

Trust me, it's weird for us Canadians, too *g* I'm too used to seeing it at .65 or whatever. Though having it equal is cool as well, I have to say. :D

I was actually thinking of trying Paris next summer but I don't know...things could be different by next summer (hopefully not worse!) but also there's probably never a really good time to go!

Eh, maybe I'll go back to Plan A, the U.S. west coast. But I was getting really excited about the possibility of Paris...

Ugh. Yeah, I heard about the Canadian dollar thing yesterday and was sad. But. Man. Makes my dream of ever going to Europe ever seem futile.

We were thinking of an England trip next summer as well (if I pass National Board, because of the bonus) but OMG NO if things don't change. :(

Tell me about it. Every time I look at what I spent in the past week I'm just like O_O. Everything except LUSH is more expensive over there. Well, that and tylenol with codeine. LOL I spent more on meals and such than anything else... and if you think Starbucks is expensive HERE... OMG. Damned caffeine addiction...

I suppose my brother, who lives and works in BC, probably thinks that even with Canada thing is Just Fine, but lkajshdlkfhlkajdsf.

Oh god yes... I've tried holding off on ordering from Bravissimo, but when you need 'em, you need 'em. GAH!

O this complicated world where we are all expected to be currency spculators, relationship counsellors, repairmen, risk managers and so many other things...

There's speculation (and I suspect that the analysis would mention if the rumour had gone around before) that Saudi Arabia may abandon its currency's peg to the US$, which may make the greenback fall further.

The US$2 pound suits Meg and me fine at the moment, but not necessarily forever. Visiting the UK may still be a reasonable option for you next summer because the GB£ traditionally sits "between" the US$ and everything else; our currency is regarded as being at a 12-month low against everything else at the moment - if we'd followed the € a bit more strongly and the US$ a bit less strongly then we could well be at US$2.10, US$2.20 or more. (Wasn't so many years ago that €1 only bought you something like US$0.80-US$0.90, so there's been a move of at least 50%, probably more like 75%.) When the US sneezes, the UK catches a cold and all that.
