OMG, y'all, the dollar. *pets its hair and readjusts its oxygen mask*
1.4 against the Euro! Holding steady right at 2 GBP. Even trading against the Canadian loonie. (Because y'all know how dearly I love Canada but doesn't that seem just WRONG somehow?)

longtimegone last night, reminiscing about the days when we were 1.4 against the pound and you could buy 5 or 6 francs to the dollar. At the moment it feels like we'll never see that again. *is woeful* We're planning to take the kids to England next summer, and I'm hopeful we can still do it, but the exchange really hurts.

on 2007-09-21 11:41 am (UTC)We're planning a similar trip. Luckily, we'll be able to stay with friends to save on hotel costs because it would be nice to, you know, to be able to eat!

on 2007-09-21 12:16 pm (UTC)Actually, I'm mostly joking, but somehow it does feel like just more v. depressing news about how much we suck. Even our currency is depressed!

on 2007-09-23 01:55 pm (UTC)There's speculation (and I suspect that the analysis would mention if the rumour had gone around before) that Saudi Arabia may abandon its currency's peg to the US$, which may make the greenback fall further.
The US$2 pound suits Meg and me fine at the moment, but not necessarily forever. Visiting the UK may still be a reasonable option for you next summer because the GB£ traditionally sits "between" the US$ and everything else; our currency is regarded as being at a 12-month low against everything else at the moment - if we'd followed the € a bit more strongly and the US$ a bit less strongly then we could well be at US$2.10, US$2.20 or more. (Wasn't so many years ago that €1 only bought you something like US$0.80-US$0.90, so there's been a move of at least 50%, probably more like 75%.) When the US sneezes, the UK catches a cold and all that.
