Kicked off the weekend with Joel Plaskett and the Hip and dragged [livejournal.com profile] omphale23 along for the ride. Joel Plaskett was adorable, tall and skinny and cute and, once again, when confronted with the perfect opportunity to fangirl in person, I just goggled and said nothing. The Hip was kind of ridiculous, really; at least, Gord Downie is certifiable. I don't get the whole, "I must act out my songs with my hands, including lots of heart-bursting-out-of-my-chest action" thing, and I couldn't really see what he was doing while he was on his back flailing around on the stage, although he does sound a lot like Michael Stipe. The best part of the show was the people watching - HEAVILY male audience, an awful lot of ball caps, a lot of air guitar and pumping fists and Male Pattern Head Bobbing. And there was That One Girl, the one who stands to the side and dances a lot, only this one kept looking like she was inches from hiking up her skirt and breaking into Irish dance.

So, in short, JPE = energetic and interesting, so yes. But, Canada, I still don't get your deal with the Hip. I'm just not seeing it.

Also, ow aching feet and ringing ears. I'm going to be hobbled and deaf by the end of Sunday night.

I think Gord's craziness is part of the appeal of the Hip, really. But—speaking as one who pretty much adores them—I'm not sure quite why they are so well known in Canada and not here, frankly. I mean, I think objectively they're good enough...

What kind of music does Joel Plaskett sing?

(I think it's a good thing I didn't come with you guys—I ended up going to bed at about nine.)

I'll do a JPE post at some point, because they're INTERESTING. It's folk rockish, I guess? I think you'd like him, and he's been around for a good while - there's some depth there.

I remain unconvinced about the Hip. I don't know....

Oh you should! I like folk-rock, esp. Canadian folk-rock. I look forward to it!

Yeah, all right, we can still be friends, even if you decide you don't like the Hip... ;)
