We're having houseguests for the weekend and I'm working on menu planning. I'm also trying to clean out the freezer, as Marc bought into a cow with some people at work and about 50 pounds of various cuts of beef will be coming our way early next week. I can figure out ways to use some of the shrimp in there, but I'm trying to figure out desserty type options. There's a few bags of strawberry ice cream base in there, so I thought about making up a batch of strawberry ice cream, but there's also a few containers of apple pie filling from last fall's apples and it's Memorial Day so, you know, apple pie! American! The original plan, then, was to bake a pound cake to eat with homemade strawberry ice cream; the other option is to bake an apple pie and make some vanilla ice cream to go with. The pound cake has the benefit of being easier to grab a bit of at random times and is, I think, a better "hang around the house all weekend" option; the apple pie is more "woo-hoo! American summer has arrived!". I think doing both is a bit of overkill, although we still might end up going that way. Anyway. I need opinions. Give me some!

Also, the kids and I want to try our hand at podcasting this summer. I don't know if we'll actually "cast" it, but at least do some audio recording before we think about distribution, yaddayadda. I'm working on sorting out the technical stuff (although advice on that is most appreciated) but I'm really stumped on content. We thought maybe kid book reviews, some interviews with them and their friends and people they think are interesting. I thought maybe a recipe of the month kind of thing? O wants to provide piano music for transitions. Any other brilliant ideas?

I absolutely love pound cake, especially with ice cream, and the bonus of its ease of eating is not to be overestimated.

I have a fantastic recipe for bourbon pound cake on lj here. It's super easy and amazingly tasty.

I am sorry for blanking on your kids' ages, but if they are old enough to work a blender and there are going to be other kids around, a make your own strawberry shake/malt station could be fun, and would have the added advantage of not really being two desserts while still using up the stuff in the freezer. Also, refreshing drinks in the sun are NEVER a bad way to spend your time, especially if you and the other adults felt like adding booze of some variety to your shake. *g*

When you say strawberry ice cream base - do you mean a custard with strawberries in it or do you mean a base that would also make an awesome strawberry syrup for waffles the morning after?

The podcast idea sounds awesome! I particularly like O's plan to provide the transition music.

Book reviews and film reviews would be good, at least to get started and have something to talk about! Or you could go for an audio diary type thing...
